Today’s music lovers can still recapture a taste of the past in Gallery Concerts, which presents music of an earlier time on original period instruments in small and congenial settings.
Performing this music with four Baroque instruments, as opposed to playing it in modern style with four modern instruments, is like the difference between hand-made chocolate, fresh mint, newly ground coffee, and a just-baked croissant, and a Hershey’s bar with mint essence, instant coffee, and a frozen croissant.
The tiny Queen Anne Christian Church, whose handsome sanctuary resembles an upside-down Viking ship, was packed to the gunwhales for the occasions, and the musicians did not disappoint. Well’s assertive Mozart was nicely balanced by the depth of Friedman’s fortepiano. Smith’s rich tone and expressive reading of [Schubert’s] ‘Arpeggione’ was topped by a first-rate Bach Suite, played in period style with a baroque bow and no end pin. And the finale, the Beethoven Trio, rang with wit and humor.
The music was charming and so was the performance. . . .

The lovely interplay of timbres between clarinet, fortepiano, and soprano had the audience listening in stillness, with barely a rustle even between the songs. Just imagine hearing this sort of music after dinner in the living room after dinner, in the days before canned music. We miss a lot these days!
